I thought it was really cool, obviously, when we got the opportunity to have this series. I've never been on TV before, and it's a dream for me. I was more excited for people to see exactly what competitive cheerleading is like. Cheerleading has evolved so much since it started that people don't even realize how big of a sport it is now.

People have stereotypes about cheerleading. I've heard it my whole life that cheerleading isn't a sport, and we just wave pom- poms around. But I think they did a really good job of showing the true athletic side of cheerleading in this show. The show already premiered earlier this summer in Canada. And I was like, "Yeah, I'm on Cheer Squad." And they were like, "It's her!" And all these little kids came running over and were like, "Can we get your autograph?" It all feels a bit weird because this was totally not something I ever saw coming in my life, but it's cool. This is your fifth year with the Great Whites. How did you originally decide to try out?

I'm from Saint John, New Brunswick, which is a small city on the east coast [of Canada]. Cheerleading isn't big there, so when I started cheerleading, I was not good at all. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty terrible. But Kenny and Lisa, I'm not sure if you saw them in the show, they started working with the gym that I cheered at in New Brunswick, and they're good friends with [the Great White's coach] Ali [Moffatt]. I was on Team Canada for a couple years, and that's where I met Ali. And then from there, I always watched Great Whites and they were my favorite team ever. I wanted to take cheerleading a bit further, and one day, I was like, "I need to move." I sent in a video tryout to Ali.

I've been loving it ever since. I don't want to go home. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below.

How old were you when you left home to cheer? Seventeen. What was it like?

What did your family think when you did that? It was really scary, and to be honest, in the beginning, I was not completely serious about it. Me and some of my friends who were on Great Whites at the time always joked about it, but finally one day, my mom was like, "So do you want to do it?

And I was like, "Oh my god, I was totally joking before but obviously now I have to do it," because I couldn't pass up that opportunity. My family's so supportive too, so they would never, ever turn down any of my dreams. It was really hard leaving my family. It was hard for them too. My dad was super upset, and I'm really close with my sister. But now my team is almost like my family.

A lot of teams have a maximum age, but our team doesn't. You can be 1. 4 and up, so really you could stay on Great Whites as long as you wanted to, but most people's bodies can't handle that.

Yeah, your training seems really intense. What does a typical day in the gym look like? Obviously it's really important to eat well and work out outside of the gym because with the moves and the tumbling that you're doing, obviously with any sport, there are things that can go wrong. We actually incorporate conditioning [strength and endurance training] into our practices now. At the end of each practice, we have this trainer come in, and we condition for about 2. I think I almost die every time, but it's definitely helping.

On the team, you're a base, which means you lift up other girls and support the bottom of the pyramids. Are there specific workouts you do or foods you eat? We focus a lot on legs because we're a big stunting team, which is lifting people in the air, [and] it takes a lot of legs for the bases.

I look around the team and we have the exact same bodies. We have the same legs. We have the same butt.

We all have the same- shaped bodies just because all we do as bases is squat when we stunt. We work out our legs a lot, our hamstrings, our core. Core is really important for the fliers because they're spinning and doing all these twisting skills, and they really need to be stable.

For food, I like to eat oatmeal a lot for breakfast. I'll usually eat oatmeal on practice or competition days just because I find that it gives me a lot of energy, and I'll have carbs at lunch too to give me some extra energy.

Even though our routine is only two minutes and 3. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below🌊💙A post shared by JORDAN KNOX (@jordanknoxx) on Apr 2. PDTDo you find there's any pressure to have certain body type or beauty standard as a cheerleader? No, and you would think being a cheerleader, just because of the stereotypes, that it's all about looking good, and cheerleaders that I've seen in movies are pretty perfect. But no, I don't think anybody feels that pressure to look a certain way on our team.

It's not even something that we talk about. Everybody works hard on the team, and it's not really something we focus on. We more focus on competitions and doing the best we can. Cheerleaders in movies can totally seem perfect.

Do you think movies like Bring It On give the wrong impression of competitive cheerleading? No, I think they actually did a really good thing for our sport.
